Why your transparent PNG looks black on Etsy (and how to fix it)

Etsy often composites transparent product PNGs onto a dark backdrop — so the checkerboard you see on your desktop becomes a black void in the listing. Here is the seller fix, plus when a transparent master still matters.

What you’re seeing

On your computer, a transparent PNG usually shows a gray checkerboard behind the product. After you upload that same file to an Etsy listing, the transparent areas often fill with black (or another ugly solid). Shoppers think the photo is broken — not that the file had transparency.

Why it happens

Listing images are flattened for the marketplace. Etsy does not keep PNG alpha the way Canva, Shopify themes, or your photo app preview does. Transparent pixels need a background color at composite time — and that fallback is frequently black. This is a platform quirk, not a bad cutout.

Fix in 3 steps

  • Place on solid whiteDrop the cutout onto a white (or brand-neutral) canvas in Canva, Preview, Photoshop, or any editor.
  • Export opaqueSave JPG, or PNG without transparency, for the listing photo.
  • Re-upload to EtsyKeep the transparent PNG master offline for mockups — never as the raw listing file.

Where transparent PNGs still shine

  • ShopifyMany themes accept transparent product PNGs for grids, banners, and PDP heroes — still preview your theme.
  • Canva & mockupsTransparent masters drop cleanly onto lifestyle scenes, packaging, and ads.
  • Pinterest, email, socialCutouts on brand colors beat busy phone photos for thumbnails.

Batch tip for sellers refreshing many SKUs

If you are refreshing about 10–25 product photos, clicking a free remover one image at a time (or paying a Photoroom / remove.bg seat for a one-off batch) adds up. A one-time PNG pack gives you transparent masters to flatten for Etsy and reuse on Shopify/Canva — without an API plan. More on that workflow: batch remove background from product photos.
